Protecting Wildlife and People
This week, KCC was given an update on a project that has been two years in the making. In 2024, KCC helped the state to acquire a $1.2 million federal grant for a wildlife corridor pilot project as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which resulted in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Wildlife-Vehicle Collision (WVC) Reduction Plan.
The latest stakeholder briefing this week on the plan from the Transportation Cabinet went through the results of the initial study, which was focused on the I-65/US60 corridor. The Cabinet has now begun looking at projects statewide. The vision for the plan Is to enhance safety and environmental sustainability on Kentucky roadways by implementing efficient effective countermeasures that reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions and support wildlife connectivity.
The lessons learned from the inititial study included how to identify collision “hot spots,” and identifying the times of year and times of day that most collisions have been occurring. The study also identified effective fencing and culvert designs to help steer wildlife away from collision areas and toward structures that would encourage safe passage, as well as vegetative solutions to direct wildlife toward safe passageways.
Now the plan is for additional studies on more project areas around the state and to ramp up outreach and public education about this program. KCC will continue to stay on this project and will send our members updates as we have them. In the meantime, we welcome your ideas on how we can help educate the public on this project.
