In a report from Transmission & Distribution World (Feb. 2016), wind energy was cited as the top source of new energy capacity in 2015, beating out solar and natural gas.

In March of 2016, the US Department of Energy announced that it would participate in the development of the Plains & Eastern Clean Line Project, which is a major wind energy infrastructure project. PnE-project-overview-map-1
Part of the challenge with wind energy is in the distribution system, and this proposed transmission project will deliver around 4,000 megawatts of wind energy resources from the Oklahoma and Texas panhandle to Tennessee, Arkansas and other markets in the mid-south and southeast. Kentucky should eventually be able to leverage its TVA territory through the Tennessee connection.

There is some connection to wind resources through serviced the Tennessee Valley Authority, which services most of Tennessee and parts of Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia. TVA has limited power purchase agreements for wind power.
